Southern Alberta Association for Psychological Type (SAAPT) is a chapter of the International Association of Psychological Type and we provide a support network and educational forum for learning and sharing best practices related to type and type theory. We are the contact point for Psychological Type users in the province of Alberta.
SAAPT is a member-based organization led by a team of member volunteers: SAAPT Board of Directors
Our Vision:
SAAPT, as a chapter of the International Association for Psychological Type, provides a forum for learning and sharing best practices related to type and type theory.
This is a “place” (may be a physical or virtual location) where we:
- Practice new material
- Share and test new research
- Network with friends and colleagues
The goals of SAAPT are to:
- Have a community of practice. Our measure of success is that we have a core group of members that plan and implement ways (meetings, conferences, websites, book clubs, e-mail, etc.) for us to share,
- Maintain the ethical standards and reputation of Psychological Type, and
- Have a diverse membership comprised of people who are interested in Type.
What is Psychological Type?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment is a psychometric questionnaire designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. These preferences were extrapolated from the typological theories originated by Carl Jung, as published in his 1921 book Psychological Types. The original developers of the personality inventory were Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. They began creating the indicator during World War II, believing that a knowledge of personality preferences would help women who were entering the industrial workforce for the first time identify the sort of war-time jobs where they would be “most comfortable and effective”.
The Myers-Briggs typology model regards personality type as similar to left or right handedness: individuals are either born with, or develop, certain preferred ways of thinking and acting.
How can knowledge of psychological type help?
Here are a few of the basic benefits of understanding Carl Jung’s model of personality types:
• It provides a model for understanding human behavior
• It provides a framework for new knowledge
• It provides a model for self-development and awareness
• It provides a positive language for differences
• It is validating and affirming
• It addresses people’s basic need for interpersonal communication skills.
