from Heather Pallas

This was my first time attending the APTi conference on Type.  The conference only happens every 2 years.   We were down in Dallas, TX for 3 days.   There was a huge menu of workshops to choose from and I chose – Brain Savvy Coaching, Leadership, Building Team Relationships and MBTI / EQ where are the connections!

One of my favorite workshops was Brain Savvy Coaching by Dario Nardi and Pam Fox Rollin.   The objective was to grasp the research-in-progress on brain-use patterns across types and understand implications for differentiating your coaching to client type.    Looking at the 8 dominate functions (Se, Si, Ne, Ni, Te, Ti, Fe, Fi) Dario walked through the research he has been doing at UCLA, how brain activity links to type and then how to coach that type.   A few interesting points – people’s brains with Ne (extraverted intuition) light up like a Christmas tree, while Se (extraverted sensing) tennis hop around the brain.   ENTJs were fast, efficient and had focused use of brain and the most efficient use.   They walked through each of the 8 dominant functions with Dario presenting what they found with the brain research, and then a discussion of how to coach that type.   We have posted the presentation on the SAAPT member’s only area – so please check it out!!   It is well worth the time to walk through the presentation.

Another of my favorite sessions was the panel on Rediscovering Jung with John Bebee, R Fitgerald and A. Spoto, all Jungian psychologists.   Much of the conversation was about the 8 functions and how we can’t have light (first 4 archetypes) without the dark (last 4 archetypes).    One of the main take-aways for me – is that your shadow material will always rise up, you can go to meet it and use these functions consciously or you can respond to it being used subconsciously, which isn’t always pretty!    A lot of Jung’s later work is about this duality of darkness and light.   A new book is being published this October on Jung’s later writings called the Red Book.   It’s due out early October and should be a very fascinating read!

We are thinking of hosting a workshop to share some of our learning’s from APTi…is this something people would be interested in attending?

I’m MBTI qualified…so now what???? – Devra Yanke

Last year when I made the decision to attend the qualifying workshop for MBTI, I was excited and looking forward to new learning.  The first morning, the SAAPT President (we had worked together on a consulting basis) was surprised that I was not already qualified as I seemed to know a good deal about type.  We’d had great conversations with our colleagues about type and how it helped us to better understand ourselves and others. Reflecting on that conversation makes me smile…I knew that I had made the right decision to qualify and begin using type in my consulting business.

I was successful and am now a qualified user.  When I received my certificate in the mail my first thought was, “OK now what?” Where do I go from here…how could I gain experience in using MBTI…what approach would I take with clients to encourage them to use it….more questions than answers!

My first thought was to connect with other type users. I joined SAAPT and found a number of people who were more than willing to offer their guidance and advice.  The next thing I knew, here I am, President Elect! What a great group of people to work with…I’m looking forward to meeting more members and prospective members at upcoming meetings and workshops!

My workshop leader, Laurie Lippin, encouraged us to begin using MBTI as soon as possible. I immediately enlisted my spouse, family members and, yes, even my neighbours.  It provided a safe environment for me to conduct feedback sessions and get some helpful feedback!  Another decision to set up my own website to complete online assessments proved to work very well. It makes it very simple to conduct the assessment process.

It remains a challenge to find new situations to use type and there is no replacement for experience and marketing skills!  I’d love to hear from others about their experiences, stories and struggles…
